Is Your Birth Control Still Right For You? Signs It Might Be Time to Switch
Your birth control should work for your lifestyle. So, if you find yourself working to remember to take it or to manage side effects, it’s probably time to make a change.

While we’re still likely a few years out from getting male birth control beyond condoms, things have improved. Today, women have a lot of options they can choose from when it comes to contraception.

If you’ve been using the same kind of birth control for years and it fits easily into your life, great. But if it’s even a small hassle, it’s worth reevaluating.

Here at Midwest Women OB/GYN Ltd in Downers Grove, Illinois, Medha Amin, MD, FACOG, Ramya Narayanan, MD, FACOG, or Shamita Bansore, MD, FACOG, can help you explore your birth control options.

Three signs you should consider changing birth control methods

Here are three indicators you should visit us for a chat about your contraceptive:

Your family planning goals have changed

The right birth control method depends on how long you want to prevent pregnancy. If you’re hoping to start trying in the near future, for example, the birth control shot probably isn’t right for you. It can take about a year to get pregnant once you stop this kind of birth control (although there’s always a chance you could conceive right away).

Or maybe your family planning timeline is moving in the other direction. If you don’t plan to have kids for a few years, an option like an intrauterine device can give you long-lasting, no-fuss birth control.

It is a hassle

In 2026, there’s no reason to stick with a birth control method that inconveniences you. Maybe you have trouble taking the pill at the same time every day, or you find it annoying to have to schedule repeat appointments to get the shot. Options like IUD or Nexplanon®, a tiny implant, can give you years of birth control without needing to lift a finger.

You have side effects

Different kinds of birth control can come with different side effects. Some women experience nausea and headaches with the pill, for example. Others have painful cramps with Paragard®, a hormone-free IUD made of copper.

Don’t settle. You have plenty of options here. If you notice drawbacks with your current contraceptive, it’s time for a switch.

Finding the right birth control for you

At our office, our team partners with you to help you select an option that works well for you. We start with a physical exam, a review of your medical history, and a conversation about your lifestyle and family planning goals. We synthesize all of this information to create a personalized recommendation for you.

You can try that option for a few months to make sure it works for you. If you’re experiencing any side effects or find it inconvenient, we can explore other choices. Our goal is to help you find birth control that fits seamlessly with your life.
